Hatmaker Week 20, May 2019: Love for Bowlers - Current waiting time, 60 - 90 days!

Week 20 Banner.jpg

The elegance and simplicity of a bowler is truly underestimated. This iconic piece of art is a fun and challenging project to complete. Last week I made this HJALMAR Bowler in a lower crown (4.5 inch I believe). This week I completed the same style but with a taller crown, 5 inches. This is the way I imagined HJALMAR Bowler to be. Taller and with a wonderful curve to the brim. After making this one, I simply need to make one for myself soon. Never thought a bowler would suit me, but I am going to try it out. Just need to figure out which colors I want to make it in. Emerald Gray for sure.

I have written about bowlers before and I will come back to them over and over. Can’t get enough of the style. Challenge me to create a different color please, it’s really enjoyable to put it together. Which brings me to the next topic for this week. Process time. I am swamped with making hats that have a bound edge. They are fun to make but do take time if you sew by hand, as I do. As I work on several hats at a time, in various stages, I tend to separate the queue for bound edge and raw edge hats. This helps to complete other, simpler hats, faster to move the process along. But this creates a stack of Bound Edge hats waiting to be sewn by hand. Which is where we are today. Increased process time to 90 days.

A sewing machine couldn’t complete the hat edge in the same way. There are machines out there that would be able to stitch the edge of the brim, but to me that doesn’t look right. Vintage sewing machines for making hats are tough to find. If you know any, please let me know.

Yesterday I almost completed the first bound edge of a Moss Green Ragnar Fedora. Still need to stitch around the underside of the brim. Another Ragnar Fedora is waiting for the same finish in order to move forward. This is what’s creating a production queue. Next Moss Ragnar Fedora will be with a brown ribbon instead. It’s going to look amazing. Even with this vintage green color, the hat looks great. Been making a lot of these hats since January. Especially for autumn, these hats are very popular. Already I am receiving requests to have hats made for Autumn, and summer is not even here yet.

Leifur Lucky Fedoras keep on coming up. Glad to be creating them. Got more coming up next week as well. I make this style of hat in Rabbit & Hare, 30X Beaver Blend and 100X Beaver versions. The shipment of 30X Beavers should be replenished in the coming weeks. The images below are from a Rabbit & Hare blend felt. Hats like these, that don’t need a brim binding, tend to be faster to make. That’s why I can complete more Leifur Fedoras every week while still working on other hats.

There is however something different on this build than my previous Leifur Hats. Something that sticks out differently from the movie hats. I am talking about something that I am customizing differently and that works much better for hats due to the great quality. Would you like to know more? Send me an email and I will tell you.
